New plants and colonies can start from a single fragment carried to a new area. Boats and boat trailers are responsible for new colonies in previously un-infested waterways. Water currents also carry fragments and start new colonies within the same waterway. ControlMechanical: methods such as underwater harvesting, hand pulling, and tilling are currently being used in Northern Idaho.Herbicide: Aquatic herbicides can be used, but only under labeled direction. Eradication is almost impossible once this noxious weed has established itself. It is vital to identify colonies early. All fishermen and boaters should be on the alert! To identify this plant, count the leaflet pairs. Eurasian water-milfoil has twelve or more pairs. The leaves collapse around the stem when removed from the water. The topmost leaves and stems may be reddish-brown or pink. Mature leaves are usually arranged in whorls of four around the stem. When choosing any kind of control method, assure that your choice is suited for your particular situation. Always read and follow the product label before applying any herbicide. | |
